Essay on Death Penalty for Youth Offenders - 935 Words
Founded in the Principles of Babalyonian in 1780 BCE, the Code of Hammurabi first established the action of retalitation and retribution of an eye for an eye. Over time punishment theories have developed from retribution, detterence, incapacitation, rehabilitation and reform. Regardless of this development the death penalty has been in existence as far back as history can tell. The death penalty is a concept of retribution, its a simple and swift answer to physical or pyschological harm done to a person by the victim or victims family. The only difference now from ancient times is that the retribution is done by our legal system and not the victims family. It is facinating how society has enhanced to what is is today inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But in reality murder crimes and violent crimes are more consistent with crimes of passion and sudden emotion. Many are not planned thought out crimes, therefore detterence through the death penalty has minimal detterence of violent crimes. The focus of our constitution in this issue is finding punishment through justice not retribution. In Roper v Simmons (2005) the Court debated whether it was cruel and unusual punishment to execute a prisoner for a crime he committed when he was a minor. In previous decisions, the Court had found it unconstitutional to execute offenders who were less than 16 at the time of their crime, but had upheld executions of those 16 and 17 at the time of their crimes. This demonstrates that in recent years youth offenders of ages 16 and 17 have been eligiable for execution and many now await execution on death row. In the conclusion of the case of Roper v Simmons the courts voted 5 to 4 on finding the execution of minors at the time of their crime was a violation against evolving decency thus a violation of the eighth amendment. One is not considered a minor at the age of 18 and can be tried as an adult, but how can we set a part a 16 or 17 year old from an 18 year old. Does an 18 year old know that much more about the world, does he have that much more experience? In reality, an 18 year old is not an adult there is a slight difference in the the ages if any.Show MoreRelatedJuveniles and The Death Penalty Essay1604 Words à |à 7 PagesJuveniles and The Death Penalty *No Works Cited One of the most controversial issues in the rights of juveniles today is addressed in the question, Should the death penalty be applied to juveniles? Relief From Tax Penalties and Interest
The best way to not have to pay tax penalties or interest to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is to file your income tax return on time and to pay your taxes when they are due. However, if exceptional circumstances beyond your control have made it extremely difficult or impossible for you to do that, you can submit a written request to the CRA asking that penalties or interest (not taxes) be canceled or waived. Taxpayer relief provisions in Canadian income tax legislation make a provision for the Minister of National Revenue to grant full or partial relief from penalty or interest payments at his/her discretion, although it is by no means handed out easily. Even if you cant pay your taxes in full, file your income tax return anyway. Before the CRA will even look at an application for relief from penalties or interest, all of your tax returns need to be filed. Deadline for Requesting Taxpayer Penalty or Interest Relief In order to be considered for relief, a request must be made within 10 years from the end of the calendar year in which the tax year or fiscal period at issue ended. Reasons Tax Penalties or Interest May Be Cancelled or Waived The CRA considers four different types of situation when considering relief from tax penalties or interest. Extraordinary Circumstances: These can include disasters, such as a flood or fire which destroyed your tax records; civil disturbances or disruption in services, such as a riot or postal strike; a serious accident or illness; or serious emotional or mental distress such as a death in the family. The circumstances of some divorces could fall into this category also.Actions by the CRA: This category is for delays that were caused primarily by the CRA. Examples are if a taxpayer was not informed within a reasonable time that an amount was owing; if a taxpayer was given incorrect information; and unreasonable and extended delays in the resolution of an objection or an appeal, or in the completion of an audit.Inability to Pay for Financial Hardship: In these situations, financial hardship means that penalties or interest are causing such hardship that the taxpayer cant provide for basic necessities such as food, rent or medical assistance. Another situation might be if tax interest or pen alties are preventing the taxpayer from ever paying taxes owing. This category requires full financial disclosure and extensive and detailed supporting documentation. Taxpayers are expected to borrow money and to sell assets if possible to meet their tax obligations.Other Circumstances: For unique situations not covered by the other categories. How to Submit a Request for Taxpayer Relief The best way to submit your request is to use the form provided by the CRA: RC4288, Request for Taxpayer Relief Be sure to read Information to Assist in Completing this Form on the last page of the form for definitions and guidance. Examples of the supporting documents that are required to support your request are also given in that section. You can also write a letter and send it to the correct address. Clearly, mark TAXPAYER RELIEF on the envelope and on your correspondence. Whether you use the form or write a letter, make sure to include a complete description of the circumstances and your tax information. Make your case in as straightforward, factual and complete a manner as possible. The CRA provides a list of information to include with your request. Chinua Achebes acclaimed novel Essay Example For Students
Chinua Achebes acclaimed novel Essay Chinua Achebes acclaimed novel, Things Fall Apart, tells the tale of Okonkwo, a powerful clan leader in his Nigerian village, Umuofia. Although Okonkwo is a man of importance, he finds himself dismissed from the tribe as he clashes with the laws of his people. The titles he procured throughout his lifetime are taken away as he temporarily seeks refuge in Mbanta, his motherland. However, the strong warrior plans the return to Umuofia with high esteem as he hopes to gain the most supreme title. This motif introduces readers to the cultural emphasis on titles of the men of the Igbo clan. Through the events of the story and Okonkwos desire to contrast the lifestyle of his dilatory father, we see the significant impact of titles in the society. Achebe prepares the issue of status through the African perspectives of their society. The social system of the tribe significantly centers around the roles and titles of each individual. The importance of these titles is so prominent to the Igbo people that the word agbala was incorporated from their language into the novel. The term describes women, who were considered weak, but it also describes a class of title-less men. This same distinction is classified by the word efulefu, the title less men who where undesired by the clan. Unlike strength, wealth, and family, weakness was not a sign of status. After a man who was agbala retorts to him at a kindred meeting, Okonkwo displays his pride in having a title by saying, this meeting is for men (22). In order to avoid being agbala as his father was before dying , Okonkwo seeks help from Nwakibie, who had taken the highest but one title which a man could take in the clan (15). Nwakibie had collected extensive amounts of wealth, as well as the thirty children his nine wives had bore. As Okonkwo strives to become more like this man, the necessity for wealth is reflected in his work. It was important in the fact that those who represented the community had taken up the ozo title. Only those who could afford to would take up this title. The anklet of title symbolized this status (167). With it came respect and honor, tied to the issue of being identified in the clan. Each title associated a man to a dignified lifestyle in which he received extended courtesy. Throught the contrast of Oknokwo and Unoka, his father, the author integrates the same principle idea of prosperity in the clan. The greatness of Okonkwo is measured against the weakness of his father Unoka. People laughed at because he was a loafer(3). In his life, Okonkwos father had taken no title at all and was heavily in debt (5). The shame of this man hung on the shoulders of Okonkwo. His greatest fear was of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father (10). Therefore, he swore to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved (11). The author uses the impaired relationship of the two characters to develop Okonkwos obligation to become strong. The strength he acquires produces the brusque personality that enables him to become outwardly emotionless. Okonkwo even goes to the extent of murdering a boy he admired to avoid being thought weak (53). However, the same traits Unoka portrayed emerge in his grandson. Nwoye defies the father he tried so hard to please, by joining the Christians of the village. Achebe uses the Okonkwos thoughts living fire begets cold impotent ash, to link the differences of the this father and his son. The importance of Nwoyes conversion, reflect the seperation from not only his father, but also from the tribal social system he was tied to. The humiliation associated with both Unoka and the conversion of Nwoye, reveal the undesirable action of being title-less to the clan. .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .postImageUrl , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:hover , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:visited , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:active { border:0!important; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:active , .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017 .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uaf300fb324c3598636b6cd43b8ad6017:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: We have looked at many different types of courtship and we have seen the different parts that convention plays in each one EssayThe impact of the missionaries in the life of Umuoifia is unappreciated by the men of high status. The elders even offered them as much of the Evil Forest as they cared to take (130). Death was essentially the outcome of the Evil Forest. This offer not only displays the elders dislike towards the missionaries, but it is also a form of mockery at the missionaries ignorance. The value of the leaders accomplishments are undermined, and all the importance that their titles held becomes insignificant when the white men appear. Okonkwo fears that his justifications for the killing of Ikemefuna, and the rejection of Nwoye would be insubstantial. The missionaries who draw away the classes of people, whom Okonkwo had overpowered, threaten his prestige.Ã The fear of failure, implemented by his fathers weakness, and the social system in which the story revolves around, reveal the Nigerian way of life. It is by social systems that Umuofia is oriented. Achebe uses this and the African perspectives of culture to build the character of Okonkwo, and accentuate the importance of power and prestige in tribal villages.

Audit in Podiary medicine Essays
Audit in Podiary medicine Essays Audit in Podiary medicine Paper Audit in Podiary medicine Paper Audit in Podiatry Medicine Auditing plays a very crucial role in organizations and not just in podiatry medicine. It is usually divided into two, where we have both internal and external audit. The role of internal audit is to ââ¬Å"provide independent assurance that an organizationââ¬â¢s risk management, governance and internal control processes are operating effectivelyâ⬠(Institute of Internal Auditors, 2010). Internal auditors deal with issues that are pivotal to the survival and success of the organization. They look at such things as the organizations standing in society, the way the organization treats its employees, growth and development, and the organizationââ¬â¢s impact on the environment. External auditors however, look at such issues like financial risks and statements of the organization (Institute of Internal Auditors, 2010). National Institute for Clinical Excellence (2008) describes Clinical audit as a ââ¬Å"process of improving quality that tries to find a way to improve patient care and outcomes through systematic review of care against overt criteria and the implementation of changeâ⬠. To do this, aspects of the structure, processes and outcomes of care given are selected and systematically evaluated against a clear-cut criteria. Where indicated, changes are implemented at an individual, team or service level. When conducting a clinical audit, some key notes need to be observed. These are: Firstly, clinical audit projects are best conducted within a structured program. They should have effective leadership and emphasis on team work and support and participation by all staff. Organizations should also know the fact that this kind of exercise requires enough funding. Another thing that organizations need to recognize is that improvements in care resulting in clinical audits can increase costs. The barrier that is cited as the most common in clinical audits is the failure by the organizations to provide enough protected time for the healthcare teams. Organizations should make sure that their healthcare staffs learn the skills of clinical audit, and that those involved in organizing audit programs must consider various methods of making sure that health service staff provide their full participation. Nice says that another key note is that clinical audit is used to improve aspects of care and is used to confirm that the current medical practice being offered meets the expected level of performance. Participation of staff is important especially in selecting topics because this enables concerns about care to be reported and addressed. This is not always necessary, but it may play a big role in reducing resistance to change. Lastly, since what is important to the patients that are receiving care are significantly different from those of clinicians, service users should therefore be involved in the clinical audit process (2008). According to the Board of Podiatric Medicine (2010), one of the roles that audit plays in podiatry medicine is the role of ensuring that doctors of podiatric medicine (DPMs) show continued capability in their work. According to section 2496 of the State Medical Practice Act, requirements for continued competence are specified and it authorizes the Board of Podiatric Medicine to adopt regulations to ensure the ââ¬Å"continuing skill of persons licensed to practice podiatric medicineâ⬠. Every time a renewal is done, a DPM must officially state that he agrees with one of the following under punishment of false swearing, subject to audit: that the DPM, is required to have passed an exam administered by the board within the past ten years. He is to have passed an exam administered by an approved specialty board within the past ten years, to have completed an approved residency within the past ten years. He is alsoà required to have current, suitable or competent status with an approved specialty board. He is to have passed Part 111 exam administered by the National Boards within the past ten years, be recertified by an approved specialty board, and have completed an extended course of study approved by the board within the past five years. He should have granting/renewing healthcare facility privileges within the past five years. Audit is also important in podiatry medicine, because it helps keep doctors accountable to their patients. Though this is not common practice as such, there is one surgeon, Ernest Amory Codman MD (1869-1940) who employed this rule in his profession. Despite the fact that he was one of the best doctors of his time, even he made mistakes. The only difference between him and his counterparts was that instead of hiding his mistakes, he publicized them and chose instead to learn from them. It is said that he ââ¬Å"recorded diagnostic and treatment errors and linked these errors to outcome in order to make improvementsâ⬠(Neuhauser, 2002). He resigned from Massachusetts General Hospital where he was a staff and started his own private clinic called the ââ¬Å"End Result Hospitalâ⬠. The difference between Codmanââ¬â¢s hospital and the average healthcare organization is that he admitted his errors in Print and in public. He published this report so that patients would be the ones to decide whether they would be able to receive quality care from him, and the outcome of the care provided. He sent copies of these reports to major hospitals throughout the country, challenging them also to follow his prints, but this did not happen. They would say that they were not allowed to do so by their lawyers. Another role that audit plays in this field of podiatry medicine is to improve the practice of the doctors. The General Medical Council advises that it is mandatory for all doctors to take part in regular and systematic medical and clinical audit. They are advised also that when doing this, they should record their data honestly, so that they are able to get the proper results and be able to improve their practice, by for example, taking part in further training. The UK Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, says that every registered practitioner is responsible for assisting the coordination of quality improvement initiatives such as clinical audits. Clinical audit is indeed an important exercise to carry out in oneââ¬â¢s organization. According to the Royal Society of Psychiatrists (2009), the main reason that audits are done is to improve the service offered to users. They say that without some form of clinical audit, it is not easy for one to know whether they are doing the right thing or even practicing effectively. If you are not sure about this yourself, then it also becomes a difficult task to demonstrate to others that you are practicing effectively. Some of the benefits of clinical audit are audit helps to ensure that working relationships, communication and liaison between staff, staff and service users (the people who receive service from medical practitioners), and between agencies are improved.à It identifies and promotes good practice, and it may result to the improvement of service delivery and outcomes for users. Another benefit of doing clinical audits is that when performed, one is able to provide informat ion to show your users that your service is effective and pocket friendly, thus, ensure its development.à Audits provide opportunities for education and training. They help increase efficiency by ensuring that there is better use of the resources that are available. They also help in improving working relationships, communication among staff members, staff and service users and between agencies. à à à à à à à à à à à Audit is an avenue that medical professionals can use to retain the trust and respect of their patients especially in an era where the patients are becoming increasingly critical. This is one of the ways that they can establish and maintain confidence in the quality of clinical care that is being accorded to them. It is a quality improvement tool, and through it, one may be able to tell whether efforts are being made by medical professionals to give their patients high quality professional care. It is increasingly becoming an essential component of professional practice (Nice, 2008). à à à à à à à à à à à When done in the right way, audit has provided a way in which the quality of care that is given to patients by medical professionals can be assessed and reviewed objectively, within an approach that is supportive and developmental. All areas of professional practice have been subjected to questions and challenges due to changes in society. Clinical audit therefore provides medical practitioners with a way of responding that compares the care given to the best practice while keeping the central role of the clinical team in agreeing and implementing plans for change. Clinical governance provides a new challenge ââ¬â ââ¬Å"to take audit at its best and incorporate it within organizationââ¬â¢s wide approaches to qualityâ⬠. References Institute of Internal Auditors. Brontes Idea of Suburbia essays
Bronte's Idea of Suburbia essays In the classic Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Bronte, the characters reflect passion and hate in the two primary settings of the plot. The tumultuous Earnshaws and their extended family inhabit the stormy household of Wuthering Heights. As opposed to the latter, the Lintons and their family occupy the rational Thrushcross Grange. The geographical setting of Wuthering Heights sets the stage for conflict. Wuthering, the title of the estate, describes the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather(2). The gloom of Wuthering Heights suggests unhappiness and pain. Consequently, the setting is not the only contributor to the suffering; the inhabitants t hemselves are dark and stormy. Heathcliffs coarse manner of treating those around him reflects the setting of his home, Wuthering Heights. He discourages offering help to Mr. Lockwood, whose departure was delayed by snow, quipping, I wonder you should select the thick of a snow-storm to ramble about in(9) and scolds him for trying to find his own way t ...
